David Brooks tries to write an op-ed piece that’s pro-religion but seems somehow moderate and reasoning. I think it says nothing.
First of all, he begins by writing about how Abraham Lincoln invoked belief in God. The implication here is that an atheist wouldn’t have freed the slaves. I wish people would stop invoking Lincoln to support their pet theories. Gay people want you to believe that Lincoln was gay, as if somehow, even if it were true, it would make you want to run out and vote in favor of gay marriage.
[Bland relativism…militant secularists…blah blah blah.] But neither can we share the conviction of the orthodox believers, like the new pope, who find maximum freedom in obedience to eternal truth.
Brooks is glorifying the unthinking hypocrisy of the typical American who says he believes in God, but doesn’t have any logical explanation for his belief, nor does he act in a manner otherwise consistent with it.
Stop by my blog and read my piece on Brooks called The Banality of Banality.
