I highly recommend this lecture by Tom Wolfe, The Human Beast. Wolfe explains that status is the most important thing that the humans desire.

FYI: the bessemer process involves the introduction of oxygen to pig iron to make steel. not "carbons" as he suggests.
Pig Iron already contains enough carbon for the required reactions.
