There's this glowing article about Chelsea Clinton in the New York Times, making her out to be all great and special.
But in fact, there's nothing special about her except for the fact that her parents are Very Important People. If she were born to regular middle class parents, she'd be a big nobody.
The story demonstrates how the U.S. has become a society of hereditary privilege. How ironic, that's the exact opposite of what liberals supposedly stand for.
Most 27-year-old from non-famous backgrounds aren't famous themselves. There aren't many exceptions, mainly athletes, actors, musicians and some early-starting entrepreneurs.

The only point to the article seems to be this: Chelsea may get involved in fund raising for her mother's campaign. great.
Like a college freshman reporter, the writer has to work in every single factoid and quote they came across while researching.
We learned that Chelsea was hired over more accomplished applicants to McKinsey with MBAs. That no one has actually seen her do any work. That she was *this* close to working in medicine but after September 11 she wanted so stay close to her patents so she went into equally meaningful work in a hedgefund. Also that the hedgefund owner is a major donor who is employing her to curry favor with the Clintons. And she is to blame for ballet tickets being 75 bucks a pop and up, thanks to her her down to earth presence at a meeting.

"The story demonstrates how the U.S. has become a society of hereditary privilege. "
What's the over/under on the odds of you writing this article just because you hate her parents?

"How ironic, that's the exact opposite of what liberals supposedly stand for."
Wait. So you're saying Conservatives are for this?

"The story demonstrates how the U.S. has become a society of hereditary privilege. "
Since when it was not the case? Lets get real here. There have always been people born with a silver spoon.
Chelsea Clinton didn't choose her parents, and some might say she has behaved better than children of other rich and famous people. Is there any evidence that suggest that she has a bigger ego than readers of this blog?

Was it me or did the article find a way of not saying whether Ms. Clinton ever graduated from Oxford. The article used the terms Enrolled at Oxford and "after Oxford."
I have always suspect that she did not really graduate since my understanding is that most American do not graduate due to the structure of the program.

What's so horrible about being a "nobody" and not being born into privilege? When born into these types of circumstances, there's a set of expectations you must follow or else face the consequences of being known as a "big loser" in the public arena or within in your own family circles.
Who the hell wants this kind of pressure?
I'm glad that I was born average. Of course, there are downsides to that; wage-slavery being one of them. Oh well, at least I can have a booze and drug problem and nobody will give a crap.

The Bush twins are better looking. And in the end, that's all that matters.

Getting upset about NY times stories is a waste. It is simply a trade publication for the liberal elite and the wannabe liberal elite. No different from Road & Track, Outdoor Life, PC Gamer or whatever.

non-partisan nailed it.

Considering how the children of presidents usually seem to turn out, Chelsea Clinton is a stunning success.

When I was in college I knew this girl who claimed to have Done the Dirty Deed with one of Gerald Ford's sons, some years after Ford had left office.
I knew this girl in a strictly non-Biblical sense of the word, so I cannot claim any sort of Six Degrees of Separation carnal connection to the White House.

The bias in the NYT article is truly absurd:
>>Ms. Clinton is a Christmas-cookie-baking, churchgoing Methodist.
Sure she is! This doesn’t pass the laugh test. She was a consultant at McKinsey and now she’s an analyst at Avenue Capital – no one at those firms, apart from the administrative assistants, bakes cookies. The writer wants you to think that Chelsea's "jus' regular folks."

The hereditary privilege part is nothing new. Every retarded Kennedy can't help but get elected in New England. They're all Dems last I checked.
I'm just hoping that the gross incompetence of Shrub will be enough to pound a stake through the heart of the Bush political clan. But I'm not counting on it.

Maybe we'll see George P. Bush running for President in 2016.

unlikely. as a brief walk through any social event attended by the America aristocracy will show you, no matter how ugly you are, how dumb, or how obnoxious, any man or woman born to the upper classes is guaranteed a spouse from an equally respectable family. it's like a law.
i'd rather be ugly & be born to a wealthy, famous family than be really good-looking & be born to an average, run-of-the-mill family. the rewards of the former are far greater & last forever.

Ugly, rich guys get laid all the time. As for Chelsea Clinton, I wouldn't kick her out of bed, it would be a pretty good story to tell around the water cooler. Maybe she could also get you a nice, do-nothing job that pays really well.
Posted by: | July 31, 2007 at 12:05 PM
ugly rich women get married all the time. if you're an ugly girl or a girl who wants to be promiscuous the best thing that can happen to you is being born to the right family. the prestige of the right last name, can protect a girl from the disgrace a poorer, equally promiscuous girl will surely face and allow an ugly, well-bred rich girl to marry way out of her league.
moral of the story: do your future children a favor & make something of yourself.

Of course she is special, she was born a Clinton. She is wealthy and has influence and access to power, probably quite easily. People want to be her friend and do stuff for her because of who she is.

Why so much coverage on chelsea clinton? and why not on the current first daughters, the bush daughters? I want to know more about their lives. Someone please cover their lives.

I don't know if that is a real plea or meant as sarcasm. I could actually do with just more photos, as they are attractive babes.

I have read your pith and I give you credit. Banal, pedestrian stuff. Keep up the fine work. Now I've got to get back to saying horrible things about minorities in that other post below.

Adding pith:
Check out this article in the New Zealand press:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/thepress/4134777a13797.html
The author notes that
"[Evolutionary Psychologists] striving for paternal approval leads to a phenomenon called Publishing a Headline Grabber, just to get dad's attention and show him they can foot it in the real world."
The same newspaper today has an article on "vegansexuals" , a term coined by a university professor. it describes the rampant trend of vegans refusing to have sex with nonvegans because their bodies are made of piles of dead animals, and that just gross.
Also relevant to this blog and which I got to say feels like to motivation for a lot of stuff you see out there:
5. EPs harbour a deep resentment of the high-status male.
At university, all the high-status males shunned psychology for the real fields of learning, such as medicine, science, engineering and commerce. These more desirable males scorned EPs, believing correctly that EPs can say what they like because no-one knows what early man thought and what was passed on to upcoming generations.
Theories such as men like big breasts because our ancestors found that big breasts tend to sag and therefore gave a better indication of age did not, for instance, win EPs any respect. The resentment resulting from being scorned by high-status academics causes EPs to go for populist claptrap which ensures them an audience, usually on television. This gives them the appearance of high-status individuals.

Am I the only one who came close to throwing up reading more Clinton-ass-kissing by the New York Times? Seriously, something has to be done to prevent them from getting back in the White House. The church-going, cookie-baking comment was the worst of all... rich, liberal, famous, women in their 20's do NOT go to church. Or bake cookies.

I agree, but I never hear anything about what's going on with the Bush daughters' lives compared to what Chelsea does when Clinton was in power. I think they are more attractive than and probably do even more interesting stuff than Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan. I want to be informed of the Bush daughters' actions, they are the current first daughters after all.
