APH asked a question in a comment that deserves a blog post in response.
HS I agree that teaching middle class values could be tremendously beneficial to lower class students (and inexpensive as well). Since this is something you bring up from time to time, would you mind expanding upon this concept - specifically, what would be taught …
How to speak proper American-accented English, how to dress properly, how to behave, don’t steal, don’t behave in a violent manner or get into fights, resolving conflicts peacefully, respect authority, respect other people’s property, the importance of saving for the future, not buying stuff on credit, delaying gratification, doing well in school is very important, you shouldn’t have children until you get married, etc.
… who would teach it …
The school teachers we have now are perfectly qualified to teach it because they represent the quintessential middle class American (see here). They would be teaching their own values.
… what role (if any) parents would have in the process …
The very reason we have to teach middle class values in the first place is because parents failed to do this themselves, thus parents would not have much of a role in the process. One important middle class value is caring about your children’s education, but any school teacher who works in the ghetto knows how few parents show up on parent-teacher night. Parents like that aren’t going to offer any help.
Do you think it's something that should be taught everywhere, just to give the illusion that a certain subpopulation isn't being targeted?
No, because middle class children learn middle class values from their parents, so teaching it to them again would just be a waste of time better spent doing other learning. And it would be harmful to upper middle class children who learn upper middle class values from their parents.
Of course I am aware that leftist liberals will fight tooth and nail against my plan, so it’s not likely that this will ever happen. God I hate liberals. Everyone please vote against Obama.
At what age should a student be exposed to instruction on middle-class values …
As soon as the education system gets hold of them. In Head Start or kindergarten.
… is it a one-year deal or a regular part of the curriculum?
It has to be a regular part of the curriculum through high school graduation (which is how far the children would get if the values took hold).
