Pirates from a Muslim African nation are attacking ships:

Somalia’s notorious pirates staged perhaps their most brazen attack yet, seizing a Ukrainian ship carrying dozens of heavy tanks , maritime and diplomatic officials said Friday.

Is there any part of the day Americans don't spend trying to figure out how to subjugate some area of the world that's not under their control? America can't even manage Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Georgia, Israel, China, Pakistan and North Korea. Ukrainian tanks in Somalia is probably not realisitically something America can have control over in the near term.

The important question here is why isn't the US selling the Kenyans tanks? We make a great product and they practically sell themselves! Russian designed tanks and armored vehicles were blown to pieces in both Gulf Wars and by the Israelis. Another dropped ball by the marketing department. Pathetic.

Piracy is a problem in many parts of the world, including Latin America, and most particularly in the Straits of Molucca. Ship crews sometimes use fire hoses to wash the pirates off. More frequently, the ships are boarded, the crew held hostage, and sometimes released, sometimes killed.

The ship itself may be stolen, given a new paint job with a new name, and put back into service. There was an excellent article in The Atlantic Monthly about modern piracy several years ago.

I think the US Navy does patrol in key areas for pirates, but it might be a better idead to simply arm the lightly-crewed (part of the problem) modern cargo ships with automatic weapons.

Whatever happended to the merchant marine? And bring back the Q ship. Give these guys some 40mm cannon along with some personal stuff and some .50s. All low tech and all highly effective, easy to maintain, etc... Not too many pirates gonna mess with that. And I agree with ye idea to blast the scurillous fuckers to kingdom come.

I read the article. No dead Somali pirates. Sounds like the Navy needs to get those "spray and pray" swabs back to the range. A shameful and embarrassing performance by our people. They made the AF look good.

Good idea. We also need Jefferson to issue a few letters of marque and reprisal against Osama Bin Laden and his associates, rather than dragging the U.S. military into a hugely costly "war on terrorism".

The Barbary states tried to extort money from the United States. Jefferson and Congress decided to build a navy instead of paying the protection money.

Actually, Jefferson proposed a multinational approach to the Barbary threat. It garnished little support and after the pasha of Tripoli declared war on the US after learning the US was paying more tribute to Algiers (Tripoli had been extorting money from the US for some time) Jefferson decided upon a unilateral naval effort (suspending his want to dissolve the American navy, btw.)
