He has a deep distrust of black people, just like you. Where are you at in the picture?

I feel for that guy - thrust into the spotlight, his life turned upside down, all because he had the temerity to defend himself against savages.

Yeah, but he's proved he has the balls to use deadly force to defend himself in a far nastier climate. He may not be an alpha but he is a man.

So if I've correctly learned S.O.P. round here, it's time to conclude from this photograph of Mr Goetz and his surroundings that he's a congenital alpha/beta/omega/whatega, and then to further use this anecdote as evidence for the efficacy of the theory overall.

How am I doing?

Bernie Goetz proves you can be a nerd and a hero.

The guy deserves a medal for standing up for himself.

I don't get it. Isn't that old news?

The man seated on the left appears to be mentally retarded. It's hardly fair to call him a nerd.

We discussed the Goetz case in Criminal Law last semester. The guys were generally a lot more forgiving of what Goetz did than the girls were. One girl called him a "little bitch".

But I agree with SFG. Bernie Goetz is a man.

"So if I've correctly learned S.O.P. round here, it's time to conclude from this photograph of Mr Goetz and his surroundings that he's a congenital alpha/beta/omega/whatega, and then to further use this anecdote as evidence for the efficacy of the theory overall.

We can't make a final conclusion until we see how hot, or not, his wife/mistress/girlfried is.

"We discussed the Goetz case in Criminal Law last semester. The guys were generally a lot more forgiving of what Goetz did than the girls were. One girl called him a "little bitch". "

I don't understand why this would be so. Is it because guys are more territorial than girls?

The Wiki on B. Goetz includes this info on what two of his "victims" did later:

In March 1985, soon after being released from the hospital for the treatment of his gunshot wound, James Ramseur falsely reported to police that two men hired by Goetz had kidnapped and attempted to kill him.[31] In May of that year, Ramseur held the gun while an associate raped, sodomized and robbed a pregnant eighteen-year-old woman on the rooftop of the Bronx building where he lived, and in 1986 was sentenced to 8⅓ to 25 years in prison. Barry Allen committed two robberies after the shooting, one of them a chain snatching in the elevator of the building where he lived.

If Goetz had been wise, he wouldn't have fired right away. He should have pulled the gun and backed away; if any of those guys made a move after that, THEN he should have fired. Seriously, I don't think a bunch of hoodlums would risk death just for a few bucks; they're not terrorists. Doing this would have saved him the headache of a criminal trial, but still symbolized the whole "subway vigilante" thing.

Cool! I've got to send this pic to my old man. What a blast from the past.

You youngsters can't even imagine what NYC was like in 1985.

OTOH, Goetz was more like Charles Bronsen than an innocent victim trying to merely defend himself. He went out looking for trouble. He also may have burned down an old newspaper stand in his GV neighborhood that was being lived in by vagrants.

Could I ask, how the HELL did you find that on Flikr?

And one hell of a shooter with a wheelgun.

According to Wikipedia:

"In media interviews, Goetz, who had prior firearms and target shooting experience, described how he discharged all five rounds in less than 1.6 seconds. (Some eyewitness testimony stated all shots were fired within one second.)"

That is some damn fast (and accurate) shooting. Too bad they lived.

You are google stalking Bernie Goetz?

Man, you really need a twitter to help us understand what is going on in HS world.

"He has a deep distrust of black people, just like you. Where are you at in the picture?"

Please zzz, not this sanctimonious shit again. Your last comment a few months ago about how horrible we all are for wanting to make lots of money instead of "working with" crack babies, drug-addled freaks, indigents, stupid future criminal NAMs in public schools, or taking pro bono cases for savages (like the animals Goetz shot), etc...all while having to sit next to whining do-gooders like yourself is quite enough.
Do us a favor(and the people you work with, they'll appreciate it, believe me) and STFU about things you know to be true but don't like and decide to cry about.
Please continue your good works with the ungrateful parasites that are poisoning our society, but know this: You are wasting your time and energy with people that are too stupid/ do not care, but probably both. You can lie to yourself all you want, but enough with the holier-than-thou shit. And watch your back when you head home. Seriously. Nobody should end up like those poor kids in kentucky.
P.S. stop reading Gladwell.

Actually, if crime in New York was that bad, then Goetz should have checked to see whether there were young black men in the subway car (female blacks or elderly blacks would have been fine) and not gotten on if there had been.

Instead, he got on the car with these four young black men and sat near them too!

I have to say I feel very sorry for Goetz. I always have a hard time identifying with criminals. With the adrenaline pumping, he did more shooting than he had too.

Carrying a gun was a good idea if crime in New York was that bad. But perhaps he should have used if he were mugged and just excercised special caution as noted above in the subway (i.e. avoided cars with young black men).

"After Guiliani became mayor, he instituted a crackdown on quality of life crimes like graffiti and turnstile-jumping. This helped to make the subways a lot safer. The cost of the subway fare keeps out a lot of the riffraff."

The crackdown on turnstile-jumping indeed helped reduce serious crime, but not by making subways unafforable for criminals. By stopping turnstile jumpers the police were able to search them for weapons and drugs and check for outstanding warrants. Lo and behold, a decidedly non-insignificant percentage indeed had weapons or drugs or outstanding warrants, and therefore could be taken off the streets.

"Please zzz, not this sanctimonious shit again."

I'm not condeming Bernie Goetz actions.

Has anybody told you that the majority of homeless aren’t drunks or drug addicts but people who lost their homes because somebody in the family lost their job or got sick and couldn't afford their medical bills because they don't have health insurance (or a underinsured)?

I don’t have any animus toward moderates except one: you’ve kept your mouths shut while radicals and extremists turned the GOP into a rabid dog, an authoritarian nightmare that thinks the Constitution is a “quaint” document and spying on citizens is perfectly acceptable.

New Orleans was a modern Sodom and Katrina was God’s punishment for its sins. Right?

You may or may not believe that, but you’re supporting people who do, and that sends a message to the culture: “It’s OK to hate. These sinners don’t deserve any better.”

I also remember reading a story a while back about 5 Orlando teenagers whom were arrested for killing a homeless man. The radical conservative message has gotten through loud and clear: “Those people don’t matter. Kill ‘em if you want to.”

"taking pro bono cases for savages"

Why not? Debt ridden, law graduate, trust-fund punks like you complain that you can't find work with your expensive degree. Stop complaining and go practice law. Sorry that there wasn't a six figure law job waiting for you after you graduated. I guess somebody else can fill the void of making the rich richer and cracking down on worker organizing campaigns.

Better idea: You can prosecute the savages.

Possibly the most hysterical(in both meanings of the word) comment around here in some time. And wrong too. Your assumptions about many posters background's are pretty far off the mark as well. A nice rant though...
But to tell you that truth that whole bit about offing hobos and bums had me wondering. I mean I'd like to take out my frustrations on some defenseless beggar with a brick, crowbar or 2x4, but that kind of stuff is a pain to carry and is never sitting around when you need it. I'd use a pistol, but I'm a "hands-on" type of guy, so that's way too impersonal. Dammit, I'm a people person!
However, that indigent, scarecrow-looking junky piece of dreck who staggers about with a cup asking for change to get his next fix at the intersection of Rt. 7 and Tonnele Ave(you know, right under the Pulaski Skyway) in JC is a real pain. Holding up traffic, the visual pollution his presence causes...I'd like to maybe "accidently bump" him with the car, but who wants to get blood on the Mercedes? With problems like these...

Has anybody told you that the majority of homeless aren’t drunks or drug addicts but people who lost their homes because somebody in the family lost their job or got sick and couldn't afford their medical bills because they don't have health insurance (or a underinsured)?

You're as crazy (or high) as the average homeless guy.

If that's the case, prove it. Cite something.

BTW, I've crunched the Census Bureau's Household income statistics, and household income is correlated with number of income earners per household, hours worked, and years of education. The correlation coefficient is an asounting 0.996!

This post is the 6th hit on "Bernie Goetz" on Wikipedia.

"checked to see whether there were young black men in the subway car" ???

Yeah right. Thats like trying to find a classroom in Berkeley without any asians. You cant live like that.

Nothing of substance in your reply, just a lot of hot air coming from some company man.

As for The Engineer: How about you prove that homeless people aren't a bunch of drunken, drug addicts. Also, be aware that homelessness isn't necessarily a permanent place for a large number of homeless people. Quite a large number of military veterans are homeless and plenty more have battled mental illness their whole life and neglected as children.

The CBS morning news carried a news item about the growing number of homeless in California. Two things caught my attention. One is that in California it is illegal to park on a public street and sleep in your car. Two, the people breaking this law are newly displaced former home owners.

These criminals that are breaking the law by sleeping in their cars were law abiding middle class citizens just a few months ago. Why would normal law abiding middle class citizens turn to a life of crime overnight?

The economy of course.

"Dammit, I'm a people person!"

Nope, you're just a chain smoking sociopath. I realize that's probably a term of endearment for you, so take it however you please.

Evil is cool man!

Wrong again, zzz. You're 0 for 2. And you've gotta explain the smoking thing.

You wrote: "Wow, that's a really cool picture of nerds. Remind me never to join a ham radio club."

Isn't the piece of equipment an oscilloscope? I don't think it is a ham radio. Of course, I am not a geek either.

"We discussed the Goetz case in Criminal Law last semester. The guys were generally a lot more forgiving of what Goetz did than the girls were. One girl called him a "little bitch".

I think women are generally much less forgiving of the actions of omegas; they want to see them die. Men figure even if a guy like that ain't a winner, he's someone you want by your side in a fight. Roissy, please comment.

"And you've gotta explain the smoking thing."

Almost everyone of the Ayn Rand's "heroes" (and Ayn Rand herself) in her boring novels was a chain smoker. Judging by your remarks, you're obviously a reader of her fiction.

BTW, Goetz (the guy in the black shirt, right?) is one of the better looking geeks in the picture, if not the best looking of the bunch.

All of the geeks in the picture could be much better looking, even decent looking, if they tried hard (that is, got thin, shaved, wore well fitting and more formal clothing, got better glasses, etc.)

I can't believe that people are seriously claiming that there is any significant amount of homelessness caused by mortgage foreclosure. Homelessness is cause by 3 things:

A) Low IQ; i.e. the inability to produce in society
B) Substance abuse
C) Mental illness

All three are genetic and can only be corrected by preventing breeding by these 3 types. I remember reading that between 85 and 90 percent of the homeless have at least either a severe mental illness or have severe substance abuse problems. Also, about 2/3rds have BOTH mental illness and substance abuse.

"BTW, Goetz (the guy in the black shirt, right?) is one of the better looking geeks in the picture, if not the best looking of the bunch.

There's nothing particularly geeky looking about the man standing in the center of the picture, to the right of the man in the baseball cap, other than perhaps a somewhat odd look on his face. He's slim without being too thin,* may be reasonably fit, is shaved, and is wearing a normal-looking casual shirt. He would be unremarkable in a different context. In other words, we tag him as a geek because he's photographed with other geeks and we know he has a geeky hobby.

* = we can't see much of his body, but going by his neck and face he is not overweight and most likely does not have a distended abdomen

Hey zzz, you're a jackass. Google: homeless "mental illness" addiction

Upwards of 85% of the homeless are mentally ill AND on drugs. Their barriers to rentry into society are enormous, and go far beyond a home and a job.

Having some personal experience with relatives who are nuts and cokeheads, I know what the heck I'm talking about. It isn't easy to get people to properly take their medication, especially when improper use gives them a buzz, and their addicts to begin with (cigarettes, alcohol, pot, crack, whatever is available). Combine that with borderline retardation... and it's really hard.

Also, look at those household income statistics. The median number of income earners for the bottom quartile is... zero. Think about that. There are plenty of people out there without jobs who aren't homeless. What's the difference? Mental illness and addiction.

"Almost everyone of the Ayn Rand's "heroes" (and Ayn Rand herself) in her boring novels was a chain smoker. Judging by your remarks, you're obviously a reader of her fiction."

0 for 3. Hit the showers...

There is a russian proverb about a ship´s captain that went trough 10 storms but failed 10 times to talk to the woman he loved

This guy is like that. He is clearly not attractive to women. SO they condemn him. If he was Bill Clinton or even Mumia, they wouldn´t. W

FWIW, it does not appear that Bernhard Goetz is a ham. At least, there's nobody matching "Goetz, B" in the FCC database (but the database only goes back to about 1998). Bernie's an electronic and nuclear engineer, though, and he used to run an electronics repair business, so that could just be a photo from his place of business.

I also should point out that almost all of the criminals profiled on that page are very ugly. I don't think skin color has much to do with crime but rather one's attractiveness.
