In response to my previous post about crime in Nantucket in which I suggested that the white working class labor force was replaced by NAMs, leading to crime, commenters asked, “but if white working class people can’t afford to live on Nantucket, how can NAMs afford to live there?”
This was a pretty legitimate question. I found the answer in this fascinating article about this very subject! I highly recommend reading it, it’s very informative. The executive summary follows.
In the old days, before the 1980s, Nantucket survived on a combination of white American workers who lived on the island year-round, supplemented by college students for the summer tourist season.
What changed? (1) The cost of regular housing on Nantucket increased, making it too expensive for college students and working class white people to live there. (2) The length of the tourist season increased, making it impossible to rely on college students for a tourist season which extended beyond the college summer season. (Also, I think as a general non-Nantucket-specific trend, college students have moved away from doing menial labor during the summer.) (3) The U.S. government created new visa programs, specifically the H2B and J1 programs, which allowed the American workers to be replaced with foreign workers.
But how can immigrant NAMs afford to live on Nantucket? The answer is that the local government created special zoning laws which allow business owners to build housing for employees. This includes dormitory-style housing allowed near the airport (which I suppose would be the least desirable place to build houses for rich white people). So it would seem that Nantucket solved its employment problem by zoning a NAM ghetto near the airport. But now, rich white people are afraid to walk around alone at night, and the white people have been forced to buy locks for their front doors which they previously kept unlocked.
MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE NANTUCKET RAPIST
A news report about the rape which took place in 2008 in Nantucket:
NANTUCKET - Nantucket police have provided a basic description of a suspect sought for a sexual assault against a woman Sunday morning in her home in the mid-Island area.
Police said the suspect is a slender but muscular black male who stands between 5-foot-8-inches tall and 6-foot-tall.
According to a press release, the suspect fled the woman's home around 5:45 a.m. Sunday after she was sexually assaulted inside her home early Sunday morning. Police said the alleged assailant entered the unsecured residence and overpowered the victim.
The guy was caught and turned out to be one of those Jamaican workers they imported to replace the white American labor:
NANTUCKET - A painting contractor is being held on $30,000 bail after being arrested on rape charges stemming from an alleged incident on July 4th. 37-year-old Alfred Bartley of Nantucket and Jamaica is charged with raping a 17-year-old woman, unarmed robbery, assault, and indecent assault on a person over 14. He pleaded innocent.
As you see, Nantucket didn’t just import cheap labor willing to live in dormitories near the airport, they also imported rapists.
