Zimmerman is black!

There’s a new Reuters article:

The 28-year-old insurance-fraud investigator comes from a deeply Catholic background and was taught in his early years to do right by those less fortunate. He was raised in a racially integrated household and himself has black roots through an Afro-Peruvian great-grandfather - the father of the maternal grandmother who helped raise him.

I urge you the read the article. It has extremely detailed reporting about the large number of crimes which had taken place in Zimmerman’s community during the previous year, and the suspects in most of the crimes were young black males.

The only downside of this article is the line near the end which says that Zimmerman “disregarded police advice against pursuing Martin” which is stating as fact an assumption of Ben Crumps that’s not based on any actual evidence.

DEFINITION OF PURSUE

It generally means one of the following two dictionary definitions when people talk about someone “pursuing” a criminal suspect:

: to follow in order to overtake, capture, kill, or defeat

: chase {pursued by dozens of fans}

Zimmerman may have been looking around for Martin, but there’s no evidence he was chasing him. If he was chasing him, the altercation wouldn’t have taken place so close to his car.

It sucks to be middle class or high prole in America and live near a big city. You want to do the right thing, but living in a nice/safe community with good schools is cost prohibitive. So there's a good likelihood some of your neighbors (or their visiting families) will make your life unpleasant. One pitbull on a block with a knucklehead owner is enough to really make your area suck and have to worry about your kids playing outside. It seems like Zimmerman did follow in order to "come upon" Martin or to "catch up" with him. The first definition may be applicable.

Having a black great-grandfather would make Zimmerman 1/8 black. While the One Drop Rule may not be quite as absolute in practice as it is in theory, a person who is 1/8 black certainly would qualify as black, even if someone who is, say, 1/32 or 1/64 black might not.

That being said, the fact that the black ancestor was Peruvian may change matters. People with Latin American ancestry don't fit neatly into the boundaries of the One Drop Rule. It would be difficult for a person of Zimmerman's background to qualify as black for affirmative action purposes, though in a sense that's irrelevant because in most cases the Latin American ancestry is a fully adequate substitute.

If this is the distinction you are attempting to draw, then the second definition is inapplicable for the same reason.

Perhaps you can try to say that 3 is more applicable, but, the dictionary only groups 1(a) with 'pursue.'

However, it seems like you can follow something without knowing specifically where that something is or where it is currently going. If you attempt to find someone based on where it is you last saw them head, or general inferences to that effect, I'm unsure why this wouldn't be 'following.'

Last, it seems like Zimmerman had some idea of where Martin was---he remembered his location, and he saw where Martin was going. Using evidence (whether it's last location seen and general ideas about where suspect could be going, or actual 'tracks') to move after a specific individual seems fine.

Zimmerman hasn't received much support from the hispanic community. Groups like La Raza are comprised of Mexicans as far as I know. A lot of hispanic groups really can't stand each other. OT, but I saw a bona fide pickup artist in action yesterday on the street in SOHO. He was a youngish (20-something) white man, about 6' tall, fit, slightly above average in terms of handsomeness. He was neatly dressed with a pink sweater (!)

He was approaching girl after girl on the street. I tried to eavesdrop on his conversations -- I heard one girl say something like "I have a boyfriend." I heard him asking another girl for her phone number.

Probably there was some kind of angle behind the pink sweater -- to make him seem less intimidating or something.

Something still doesn't sit right with me regarding Trayvon. Who goes out at that time of evening to just get skittles and Iced Tea just to snack on during a game? Seems like a mighty light snack to me. While I don't thik he was out t burglarize houses THAT night, I do think he may have been casing potential houses to rob. Talking to Dee Dee was just an attempt on Tray's part to not look too obvious in what he was doing.

Another thing: why did it take 3 days for Trayvon's parents to learn their son was dead? What were they doing in that 3 days time? If Tray did indeed go out for skittles and iced tea from the nearby 7-11 and he did't show up at a presumed amount of time, they should have known something wasn't quite right. Since the dad lives in the area, did he ride around looking for Tray? Let's remember, Tray was only temporarily staying with his dad due to a suspension. It's doubtful he would have had any friends that he would go and visit at that time as he's not from the area. Maybe they didn't feel it was a cause for concern because Tray might have had a habit of disappearing for long spells of time.

Yes, as a "mixed black person" I have witnessed many many people talk bad about black people through social programming. Many black people may not be aware of this. I worked with a half-filipino girl and it got to be too much. She did not want to go out after work because the mostly black crew was "black ie ghetto". She would complain that it was not her choice to be on a ghetto team.

Many are self hating and loathe the black side. I have witnessed this many times. I am ashamed to say that when my "black" father took me shopping sometimes I would pretend I was not with him. My dad was aware of this. It is really sad many white people are mixed with black down the line and that may be one of the reasons for inflicting pain and suffering on the black race.

You're insinuating that "self-loathing" influenced Zimmerman to shoot Martin "in cold blood". Do you have any evidence as to how Zimmerman felt about his African ancestry and if this played a part in his behavior that night?

Also, I'm not sure if you did this intentionally, but from the statement I quoted above, one can reasonably infer that true black behavior is ghetto and only by embracing ghetto behavior will a black person-mixed (biracial) or not-be truly black. Rejection of that behavior is necessarily a sign of self-hatred and a rejection of black roots.

Thanks for clearing that up. You just gave justification for non-blacks to distance themselves as much as possible from "authentic" black people. Most sensible people find such behavior distasteful, including "inauthentic" black people.
