It's also obvious that his Muslim stepfather never fed him dog meat. Dogs, like pork are considered haram/non-kosher for Muslims. The people in Indonesia who are known to eat meat are the Batak Christians, not the Javanese Muslims.

The charge that Obama fabricated stuff in his memoir presupposes that he wrote his memoir. I'm not aware of a good reason to believe this.

This only matters when we don't like the president. Bush had his national air guard BS, and Obama has his composite girl friend. All it proves is that we are electing small men to office.

Obama gets busted on the fight with the NY girlfriend after seeing a black play never happening.

The response from Maraniss is to say "oh well that part was a composite".

He probably should have asked Ayres why he thought it was thematically necessary.

Oh yeah- how perfectly in key is it that these two idiots went to see the boring, pretentious The Bostonians after their group shower following the emasculating foot race...

During the 2004 Republican convention, governor Schwarzeggar said he arrived in America in 1968 with empty pockets, but a deep desire to succeed.

I suspect the Mr. Universe title has gotten more remunerative since 1967.

"She couldn’t be black, she said. She would if she could, but she couldn’t. She could only be herself, and wasn’t that enough."

Bwahahaha! Is this the crap that Obama sells? Jesus fucking Christ, did anyone believe this shit?

"He probably should have asked Ayres why he thought it was thematically necessary."

Ayres had to make Obama - who is dumb and boring - look more interesting than he actually is.

In the introduction to "Dreams From My Father" Obama wrote: "For the sake of compression, some of the characters that appear are composites of people I've known, and some events appear out of precise chronology."

This is just another fact free faux outrage of the day by the people who hate Obama.

Welcome to the post fact world of political journalism.

Genevieve Cook and Obama both wrote books, both could make stuff up. Who to believe? Your choice.

-Devil advocate

Let's have fun with this. WHat if the covnersation did happen but with Obama and a black friend and this si a massive projection by Obama and Ayers? Couldn't it make more sense that a kid with white + asian parents raising him in Asia and then white grandprents raising him in heavily Asian Hawaii wouldnt get any of the jokes and audience behavior at a play? If he was say 21-22 at the time of this incident, he had only a few years of pretending to be black and learning the culture. He wouldnt get the nuance of the black experience. The story is projection plus shows to black readers his bonafides with being down with the black experience even at a young age despite being the whitest black person ever.

Maybe it's cover for his gay over who would never be black? The more ridiculous Obama looks with stuff like this, the better.

"Bush had his national air guard BS"

That Bush attended and graduated from pilot training, then checked out in the F-102 and logged a few hundred hours in it is pretty well(actually extremely well) documented. The details of his departure from the guard are in dispute, but even there the dispute is over why a chain of events occurred, not whether it did. That's not analogous to just making stuff up.

As for Obama's book, the Seinfeld episode about J. Peterman writing his memoir contains a lot more truth than people realize.

From the beginning, every time I have looked at Obama, I have thought he looked gay, and Michelle like the perfect beard. No proof, just a strong gut feel, and I'm usually right about these things. When I read about girl-friends I wonder if my instincts are wrong, or if the girl-friends are made up.

"If he was say 21-22 at the time of this incident, he had only a few years of pretending to be black and learning the culture. He wouldnt get the nuance of the black experience"

The article also says that he carried around a copy of the "Invisible Man " and was continually reading from it. And all of their friends were Pakistani.

Obviously he couldn't pass as black with actual blacks but was desperately cramming as this point.

Hilarious Politico comment:

Similarly, the dog he ate was a composite too. It wasn’t one dog, it was an amalgam of many breeds, like casserole.

'This is just another fact free faux outrage of the day by the people who hate Obama.'

+1 to that.

'When I read about girl-friends I wonder if my instincts are wrong, or if the girl-friends are made up.'

Yes, the jet-lag from time traveling to 1951 plays havoc with one's instincts. Is this serious, are you serious?

There's a lot in "Dreams From My Father" that struck yours truly as B.S. when I read it back in 2008. Obama's purported arrival in Manhattan with no money and no place to live just seemed too implausible to be the real story. Who the hell would transfer to a new school on the opposite side of the continent (and to an Ivy in the biggest, most expensive city in the country at that!) without giving some forethought to securing a place to live?

I'm a pro at exhibiting grace under fire, but I was even kind of sweating it when I procrastinated and had to show up for a wedding in rural Georgia last month without reserving my wedding party hotel room ahead of time. It was in a small town that I'd never been to before, so I wasn't sure if what would be available if the wedding party's reserved floor had filled up unexpectedly. But since it was my fault for forgetting to call the hotel ahead of time, I just had to roll with the punches and hope for the best (and never tell anybody at the wedding that I'd neglected to call the hotel ahead of time -- like a normal person).

But to leave Hawaii for school in Manhattan without even having a place to stay for the night (let alone for the school year) is so careless that it almost can't be taken for a real event in Obama's life. It's also extremely unlikely that the residential life department (or whatever they called it) at the school would have let the soon-to-be-matriculating Obama get through the summer without harassing him to get a place to live. Colleges, after all, employ people to make sure that all non-commuting students have adequate housing (transfers included). Obama's story just sounds too much like the tired, by-the-book "rags to riches" cliche about the "talented kid with big dreams who shows up in the Big Apple with no money and no place to stay."

Doesn't Madonna's biography revolve around a similar narrative?

The only way Obama's story might make sense is if he'd signed to audit some classes as a visiting student, or as a "non degree seeking" student of some sort. Sometimes that can be a backdoor way of transferring to/getting into a school where you'd otherwise have little chance of being admitted.

If you audit courses, or sign up for classes as a "non credit seeking," or "visiting" student, you're usually on your own when it comes to living considerations (as it's more or less assumed that you're already living/working in the area).

Along those lines, I once did some work for a smooth-talking state legislator who liked to boast about how he'd flunked out of Dartmouth in the late 60s and immediately slipped right (through the cracks) into another good school. Instead of knocking around some junior college after he toked his way out of Dartmouth, the guy signed up to audit classes as a "visiting, non-degree seeking student" at a reputable Big Ten school close to his parents' home. His scam was that he never told his professors that he was auditing their classes (or perhaps, when his name showed up in their class records as an "auditing" student, he somehow managed to convince them that there was some kind of a a mix-up), and thus, was able to present a transcript full of A's and B's to the a Dean at the end of the semester. That "mix-up" allowed him to gain acceptance as a full time student for the following semester.

He also liked to boast about how he'd scammed the Dean & Registrar's office into granting full credit for the grades that his professors had "mistakenly" awarded him for his earlier audited classes.

The guy is still a state legislator, but he should have run for a bigger office, because he's a natural politician.

Another story from "Dreams" that's got to be horse s**t is the narrative about the young high school basketball coach at Punahou who was described as being "from New York City" and in possession of a "sweet outside shot," but who supposedly wouldn't play young Barry because he was a racist who disapproved of Barry's "black" playing style.

That just doesn't ring true. First of all, coaching high school basketball isn't a likely career choice for a racist white guy. Basketball is a black-dominated sport, and it was a black-dominated sport when Obama was in high school in the late 70s. You might occasionally find some racist white guys coaching a white-dominated sport like wrestling (I've known of one or two wrestling coaches who weren't exactly down with tha brothaz), but you won't find many of them coaching basketball.

Also, since basketball culture in big cities like New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, and LA is overwhelmingly black, white guys who grow up playing basketball in those places (as Obama's "racist" coach purportedly did) tend to be pretty comfortable with black people and with black culture. I speak as a white guy who grew up in the basketball culture around Chicago and who played basketball at a Chicago Catholic League high school that used to be known as a basketball "power" (at least it was when I was there -- now, not so much).

The narrative about an unenlightened white coach who holds young Barry down and denies him the playing time that he so clearly deserves for no reason other than his racist biases just seems like fiction designed to cast Obama as a victim (well, that and to explain why he didn't get on the court more often).

And the bit about the coach having a "sweet outside shot" but hating on "tha brotha with tha 'shake-and-bake' and 'da flava' in his game (not quite how it was phrased in "Dreams")" is a total late 80s/early 90s cliche about the differences between white and black players that sounds like something lifted from Spike Lee back when he was complaining that Larry Bird was a scrub who couldn't do anything but shoot three pointers (which wasn't true), and that he wouldn't have been a star in the NBA if he hadn't been given special treatment for being white.

Also, at one point in "Dreams," the "racist" basketball coach tells his Punahou team (including a horrified Obama) that their upcoming opponent from the "hood" is a team full of "ni**ers." Not only is it hard to believe that a coach would have said that, it's hard to believe that Punahou played an all-black high school team from the "hood." How many all-black, high school basketball teams from the ghetto could there have been on the island of Oahu!?!

[HS: Hawaii is 0% black. Of course that's rounding error.]

Your description suggests that he made up the fact that he had a girlfriend. Something someone gay would make up. And 2 comments suggesting he is therefore gay confirm this. The truth is that he did have girlfriends but chose not to describe them individually. Its a misleading post. You have to go to the source to get the full picture.

He wasnt fabricating: In fact, Obama acknowledged the use of composite characters in the first edition of the book.

Next time read the whole article to the end

"oh well that part was a composite".

like New York magazine.

Back in 2010, Jack Cashill posited that Barack Obama's white girlfriend from "Dreams From My Father" was likely a character created by Bill Ayers, and based on Ayers' deceased girlfriend, Diana Oughton (who died in 1970 when a bomb she was making in Greenwich Village exploded).

www.cashill.com/natl_general/invented.htm

Cashill went into detail explaining how much Obama's wealthy alleged girlfriend had in common with Ayers' wealthy, deceased girlfriend. True, Obama's girlfriend supposedly grew up on a massive country estate in a small town in leafy, bucolic Connecticut, whereas Ayers' late girlfriend grew up on a massive country estate in a small (albeit charming) farming town in central Illinois. But other than that, they were a lot alike:

"Physically, the woman of Obama’s memory with her 'dark hair, and specks of green in her eyes' evokes images of Oughton. As her FBI files attest, copies of which my correspondent sent me, Oughton had brown hair and green eyes.

The two women shared similar family backgrounds as well. In fact, they seemed to have grown up on the very same estate. 'The house was very old, her grandfather’s house,' Obama writes of his girlfriend’s country home. 'He had inherited it from his grandfather.'

According to a Time Magazine article written soon after Oughton’s death, Oughton had 'brought Bill Ayers and other radicals' to the family homestead in Dwight, Illinois. Oughton’s father’s grandfather built the main house on the estate, a 20-room Victorian mansion.

The carriage house, in which Diana lived as a child, now serves as a public library. It may have already seemed like one when Ayers visited, an impression that finds its way into Obama’s words as a library 'filled with old books and pictures of the famous people [the grandfather] had known--presidents, diplomats, industrialists.'

'It was autumn, beautiful, with woods all around us,' Obama writes of his visit to his girlfriend’s country home, “and we paddled a canoe across this round, icy lake full of small gold leaves that collected along the shore.'

As aerial photos of the Oughton estate (103 South Street, Dwight, Illinois) confirm, the estate has a small lake and, despite forty years of encroaching development, is still thickly ringed by trees."

Who knows if Cashill has it right. Maybe Obama's girlfriend is really a fictional character based, at least in part, on the late Diana Oughton. Or, if David Maraniss has it right, maybe she's a real person on whom the composite character in the book is largely based. Media Matters sure thinks the Maraniss account totally pwn3d Cashill.

So if it turns out that Cashill doesn't, in fact, have it right ... well, he SHOULD HAVE been right. My mother and her older sisters knew Diana Oughton growing up (and really didn't much care for her). And yours truly has been to the Oughton estate on many occasions, as it's been in service as an upscale restaurant known as the "Country Mansion" for the last 25+ years (when I was a kid, we'd always stop there on the way back to Chicagoland after visiting downstate Illinois).

The account of the girlfriend's country estate in "Dreams" really does match up with the Country Mansion/old Oughton estate. If Ayers isn't responsible for that part of "Dreams," then it's one hell of a coincidence that his old girlfriend grew up in a country estate JUST LIKE the one in which Obama's old girlfriend grew up.

C'mon.
You should ONLY be surprised if a politician DOESN'T make stuff up.

Especially stuff that makes The Great Man Seem like "One of Us."

"It's also obvious that his Muslim stepfather never fed him dog meat. Dogs, like pork are considered haram/non-kosher for Muslims. The people in Indonesia who are known to eat meat are the Batak Christians, not the Javanese Muslims."

Just like it's obvious that none of my Southern Baptist friends drink beer. There are non-adherents to every religion...and, in fact, until the Saudis started funding schools in Indonesia, Indonesian Muslims were a pretty laid-back bunch.

"As aerial photos of the Oughton estate (103 South Street, Dwight, Illinois) confirm, the estate has a small lake and, despite forty years of encroaching development, is still thickly ringed by trees."

Enhance. Enhance. Enhance. Look at those small gold leaves.

Obama is definitely not The Other. How dare you even suggest it!

I found this part from the Vanity Fair article interesting.

"Obama was six months out of Columbia when Genevieve Cook came along and engaged him in the deepest romantic relationship of his young life. She called him Bahr-ruck, with the accent on the first syllable, and a trill of the r’s. Not Bear-ick, as the Anglophile Kenyans pronounced it, and not Buh-rock, as he would later be called, but Bahr-ruck. She said that is how he pronounced it himself, at least when talking to her."
http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/2012/06/young-barack-obama-in-love-david-maraniss

We have all been pronouncing the President's name wrong!?

Obama's life can't be that boring. He didn't reach the presidency by talking the dull path. Just looking as his surface level background would indicate he probably have some good stories over the years from a Harvard educated father, living in Indonesia, time at university and his political life. Though I suspect he probably can't tell that experience honestly, I won't be surprised if it included things like Muslim culture or something that would basically make him unelectable.

And then there's this at the bottom of the article:

"CORRECTION: An earlier version of this blog post stated that Obama had acknowledged using composite characters in the reissue. In fact, Obama acknowledged the use of composite characters in the first edition of the book."

Obama's such a devious liar because he said he was going to use composite characters, and then he did, and then conservative-readers combing for dirt felt betrayed (and vindicated).

Obama acknowledged that certain characters were composites. If you read thew book, like literally, flipped it open, you would see that.

once again Half Sig was wrong.

Hey Half Sig. Why havent you acknowledged you made a mistake.

"Wouldn’t Columbia make sure a promising affirmative action admit would have a dorm room? "

Technically, he wasn't an admit, but a transfer. Obama got a full ride to Occidental and transferred to Columbia as a junior.

The fact that he only got a full ride to Occidental, as opposed to an Ivy, suggests his SAT scores were higher than average for blacks, but not particularly impressive--probably in the mid 500s.

Columbia also didn't give him a scholarship, nor did he get any scholarships for Harvard--not that HLS gives scholarships, but you'd think he might qualify for outside money if he had impressive credentials. All of this suggests that prior to his pick as the compromise candidate to head the Law Review, he hadn't done much academically of worth.

All that said, while it's unlikely he showed up at Columbia penniless, he wasn't an incoming freshman, so there'd be fewer procedures for him to follow.
