Mass murder is certainly both violent and criminal, but I don't think "violent criminal" is the best description of a mass murderer. Somebody who shoots up a movie theater is most likely driven by ideology (e.g. a terrorist) and/or insanity. This is entirely different from the typical violent criminal in prison.

Some small percentage of the population is insane. Their brains are broken, and can't be fixed. Conservatives don't like this explanation because they want to blame misbehavior on moral failure. Sorry, some people are just fucking crazy. It isn't their fault. Liberals think that because it isn't their fault, there shouldn't be consequences for their actions. Personally, I have no objection to the death penalty for violent crazy people. It isn't about justice, punishment, or deterrence. It's about protecting the rest of society.

I agree. If a pittbull mauls a child to death, a sane person wouldn't try to understand why the pittbull did what it did and try to rehabilitate the dog to be a good little dog. They'd have it put down.

If someone is so crazy that they operate violently like a mad pittbull or grizzly bear, you've got to isolate violently crazy person from society. Even for less aggressive people, like those with extreme schizophrenia combined with drug-induced brain damage should be put away. Libertarians would rather allow anyone with the most extreme mental issues to roam freely and only put people away if they commit a serious violent crime. Part of the reason the 1950s was safer is due to many crazies locked up in mental institutions. The libertarians cry about civil liberties and other nonsense. According to Wiki, Aurora is 61% white, 15% Afr-Am, 5% Asian, 12% other races (I have no idea what it means) and 5% mixed races. 29% of all races is Hispanic (not counted as a race).

I wonder if there really was nobody carrying, if the tear gas and mass of people prevented a clear shot, or if people chose not to act (I'm not passing judgement -- I don't think a concealed carry permit comes with an obligation to be a hero). Also, the guy was apparently wearing body armor, so anything short of head shot might not have stopped him.

P.S. Can you imagine what the anti-gun nuts would be saying today if somebody had tried to take out the shooter and not succeeded? Or worse, tried to take him out, missed, and hit somebody else?

Almost all Mass murders are done by whites with some by Asians. You are smart enough to know that so I don't believe you actually believe its a bold prediction. @destructure: Licensed concealed carry is the domain of mostly non-hispanic white males over the age of 40 (though they don't hold a monopoly on the practice). Given that it was a midnight showing, that demographic was hardly present. The crowd at the theater was probably younger than average: college students and/or prole parents with illegitimate kids (no middle-class parent would take a 6-year old to a midnight showing). Heck, a lot of hispanic names came up as initial witnesses in news stories last night.

Colorado also might have a law where "no guns allowed" signs hold legal weight even for permit holders (Texas has this). It could very well be that the theater posted this stuff and it deterred permit-holders from spending their money at this particular theater. But it's important to note that all this is just speculation at this point.

As for rampage shootings, I can think of Andre Turner, the SCE Irwindale shooter (Black male, killed five White/Asian victims). Omar Thornton, shot and killed 8 MA White guys at a beer distribution business after being fired for stealing on camera (the FBI later investigated ... to see if the victims were "racist" and deserved it). There are far more mass shootings, by Black (or Muslim) guys that you would immediately think, because the Media disappears it down the memory hole. As the shootings conflict with the main story the media loves: "evil" White racists, innocent Black/Hispanic/Gay victims, and the "noble White" good people who rescue and protect them from "the wrong sort of White person."
