"The Williams Sisters aren’t liked that much because they speak and behave like low-class ghetto blacks."

They really don't, though, at least not from what I've heard. They sometimes misbehave during matches, swearing at referees and such, but that's sort of expected of tennis players.

Why mention Sailer and then completely ignore the context in which he brought up the Williams sisters? His only point was how overly muscular Serena is, and how the MSM refuses to notice it. And anyway, tennis fans are not mostly SWPL's. My guess is tennis fans would vote the two parties about evenly. Where in the blue area where I live, SWPL's gave up on tennis in the early '90's in favor of more conspicuous environmentalist activities. Maybe it's the petroleum needed to manufacture the balls.

Besides cute white girls, women's tennis sucks. They don't go for shots, and more often then not, hit moonballs/floaters and wait for their opponents to make the mistake. A mediocre player like Serena wins simply because she plays like a man and goes for her shots, and she's not very good that it either, considering all the errors she makes following that strategy.

Most boys Juniors tennis is higher skill and more entertaining to watch. But, hold on, that's true for most sports such as soccer, basketball, baseball, etc. Most physically inept readers of this blog could probably play sports better and in a more entertaining manner then women "pros".

"The Williams Sisters aren’t liked that much because they speak and behave like low-class ghetto blacks. Mystery solved."

This just isn't true. Have you ever heard Venus Williams speak? I doubt it.

Serena has had her share of embarrassing on-court outbursts but that's largely due to being extremely competitive and temperamental, something that's very common among male players. Venus has always been regarded as a good ambassador for the sport. Neither have had any off-court problems typically seen in the lower class.

Their relative lack of popularity can be explained. Primarily, it's simply a matter of them being somewhat less feminine, and thus more physically imposing that most other players on tour. Sam Stosur, a muscular white Australian player, has arms that would make Rafael Nadal jealous, and she similarly hasn't attained huge fandom despite her success.

The Williams sisters are an amazing story and they've dominated women's tennis for a decade, but yes, their race does factor into their fanbase to some extent, but it's the kind of phenomenon that can't be changed by marketing, public relations, or political correctness.

Many tennis fans gravitate to pro players who have bodies and games similar to their own. Most female tennis fans in the US are middle and upper-middle class whites who are of average size and ability, and while they aspire to the game of 6-foot Maria Sharapova, they like that she looks modelesque in the process. Most male tennis fans follow female players that they find sexually attractive.

So to conclude, race is a factor insofar as it impacts muscularity. If Rihanna were a tennis champion, you can believe she'd be universally adored.

They really don't, though, at least not from what I've heard.*****

If Serena Williams doing the Crip Walk in front of millions of people in London doesn't qualify as ghetto, then nothing does:

Maybe Venus will do the Blood Bounce after the US open.

There might be hope for you, Siggie. Serena Williams once admitted to putting a profile ad on Jdate.com after seeing "cute Jewish boys" on the site:

http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=379404

"There might be hope for you, Siggie. Serena Williams"

There is probably no way that's going to happen. Concerns about reversion to the mean and all that.

Real tennis fans don't really care for women's tennis nowadays. But the casual tv audience who only watches slams apparently likes it.

The crip walk and some of her outbursts show that Serena still has some Compton hood in her, but she's not all that ghetto, hell, her favorite band is Green Day. Venus seems to be more well behaved and even has a white husband. Part of the reason they wont go bankrupt is because they come from a two parent household, even though their father is a militant black dude.

Sig's and half the commentators' posts here show that really you can insert any sort of black person and expect basically a template of responses and assumptions.

First, "Crip-Walking" is also known as "C-Walking" and was a popular fad back in the mid 2000s when I was in college. In fact everyone that tried to teach me how to C-Walk was white. Its possible to be interested in the dance without even knowing of the gangster connotations. I don't think all the kids at collect parties listening to 50 cent are really interested in shooting people up either. Its just a thing to do. Get over it.

Second of all, Venus Williams, is by all accounts, a sweetheart and one of the nicest celebrity athletes out there. I'm guessing that Sig decided to say she acts like a low-class black because of the fact that she is black, rather than any example of her behavior. Serena has a big attitude (although if she was a man she would just be "competitive." Its probably not a race thing, because Tiger Woods was adored despite his douchebaggery, but I could also see it being a combination of the two since she lacks the grace of more people white players.

Third, Tennis Fans are not mostly SWPLs. Well Sig's definition of SWPL happens to be just some sort of construction for people who seem to like things that he dislikes. Most tans fans and players come from the $100K and above and living in the suburbs demographic. The "SWPLs" you stalk from behind your computer and behind your camera are not playing tennis. Yes, they are more likely to be northeastern liberals, but so what? Unless SWPL just means white people that vote Democratic. I've been to the US open before, its mostly people there with their families.

Tennis does tend to cut out the lower classes because it's a fairly costly hobby. You're going to be renting large courts for just two people and the equipment needs a lot of maintainance and replacing.

But it also tends to cut out the urban SWPLs since if you're going to take the hobby seriously, you're either going to have to get your own tennis court or drop some serious cash into renting just to practice. Urban building codes mean you won't be dropping tennis courts in most backyards. Tennis is a typical hobby for relatively wealthy people in rural and semi-rural areas and that's not SWPL at all.

Serena Williams also dated athletes and celebrities and wanted to design clothes.

Is there anything that screams Ghetto more than an affluent black person wanting their own, personal line of gaudy clothing?

Venus Williams is not married to anyone, black or white. She did date a white guy from 2007-2010 but he has since married a white woman. Serena has also dated white.

"Most tans fans and players come from the $100K and above and living in the suburbs demographic."

So SWPLs after they have kids.

"Unless SWPL just means [U.M.C.] white people that vote Democratic."

More or less. There are shallow and extreme forms of SWPL within this cohort.

[HS: Based on the food they sell the US Open it's SWPL.]

They do take to them. The Williams sisters have multiple commercials and product endorsement deals, are frequently on magazine covers, newspapers, Leno and Letterman ...etc.

Venus is no longer a top 10 player (has not been for a while actually) but gets tons of positive press. Serena has had a good 2012 but is usually losing to one or another Russian woman.

Compare the Williams sisters to the Klitschko brothers. Wladimir and Vitali are the dominant heavyweight boxers of this era. They are MORE dominant in boxing than the Williams sisters were in tennis. They are both PhDs, speak several languages fluently and are well spoken. Wlad has even dated some B-list Hollywood types (like Hayden Panittieri).

Ever seen them on American TV (besides HBO which only sometimes airs their fights)? Of course not.

But how can this be? Growing up in the 80s and 90s we were told that white America was hoping and praying for a "Great White Hope" and that a dominant white boxer would be huge.

Well, the 6'7, 250 pound Klitschko brothers have dominated the heavyweights for about a decade yet they are almost anonymous save for true sports fans.

The fact is that Americans - including white Americans - only like their athletes black. Almost all the coaches, fans and especially the reporters believe in black athletic supremacy. So when their blacks get defeated a sport ceases to be "athletic" and is a second-tier sport where the whites - though somewhat talented - are not athletic.

"Tennis does tend to cut out the lower classes because it's a fairly costly hobby. You're going to be renting large courts for just two people and the equipment needs a lot of maintainance and replacing."

The USTA has - or at least used to have - well-funded programs targeting blacks in the inner cities to teach them tennis.

For some reason, they never target poor whites in Appalachia or the Ozarks. Maybe if they did the women's tennis rankings wouldn't read like a Moscow phone book.

You likely haven't watched women's tennis in 20 years. There are no moonballs since Monica and Steffi came on the scene. I doubt you'd get a point if you played any woman in the top 250. I have a good friend who was a very respectable college player in the 90s and played a Spanish ranked junior woman while on vacation a few years ago. He plays regularly and is very fit. He said she destroyed him. About the only points he got were on big serves that she barely reached.
